Hapoel Haifa won only one of the previous 16 derby games in all formats, but tonight (Saturday) Maccabi Haifa spoiled the farewell ceremonies in the final round of the season and celebrated a prestigious 0:2 as a guest at the municipal stadium. This is Hapoel’s first victory in the derby since the 1:2 in November 2020 (Liren Serdal then scored in extra time) and the Greens’ second home loss in a row – something that has not happened since March-April 2019. Apart from the loss, there was a complete disintegration of the champions of the previous three years, which included two reds (Sharif Kiuf and Ali Muhammad), skirmishes and a lot of nerves on the court and on the bench.
It was a sad farewell party for Masai Dago, who was responsible for a good season (even if he only won the champion of champions) after reaching the round of 16 of the Conference League, victories over Maccabi Tel Aviv and promotion of youth. He will surely regret the embarrassing finish, while Roni Levy concluded a successful season with fourth place and will now cross his fingers for Hapoel Beer Sheva to win the cup so that Hapoel Haifa will return to Europe after six years.
