The Battle of Badr…the first victory in Islam

In this blessed month, on the seventeenth of the second year of the Hijra, it was one of the epics of Islam, and one of its venerable days. It was the Great Battle of Badr, which God immortalized in His Noble Book, as a reminder to His servants of His great grace upon them throughout the ages. The story of the Battle of Badr began after news arrived of a large Quraysh trade caravan, and accounts state that it consisted of a thousand camels loaded with various types of commercial goods. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, decided to go out to the caravan to control it and respond to the Quraysh, which confiscated the Muslims’ money in Mecca and robbed them. Their money, so he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, moved and led the Muslims to Badr, 130 km away from Medina. Upon their arrival there, Saad bin Muadh, may God be pleased with him, suggested to the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, that he build a barn for himself as a headquarters for his leadership, and in which he would be safe from the enemy. The Messenger of God praised him. May God’s blessings and peace be upon him, and the Muslims built the arish for the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, on a hill overlooking the battlefield. Under this arish, the Messenger of God supplicated to God Almighty and continued to pray until his robe fell from his shoulders, and this continued throughout the night. The two armies joined forces, and victory was for the Muslims by order of God Almighty, and God’s care for His Messenger – may God bless him and grant him peace – and for the believers was evident in the Battle of Badr. God Almighty supported them with His soldiers and angels, so the word of God was supreme, and the battle ended with the defeat of the polytheists, so they turned away, losing, and one of the reasons for the victory was after God Almighty: The Muslims fought with the system of close rows, which is a system that the Arabs were not accustomed to, as they used to fight by the method of hit and run. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, ordered the Muslims to sprinkle arrows on the polytheists first, then spears, and not to draw swords until they overwhelm them.
