Italian football legend Roberto Baggio, winner of the 1993 Ballon d’Or, was taken to hospital after being attacked by armed robbers who broke into his home and locked up his family while they were watching last night’s match between Italy and Spain.
Baggio tried to confront the thieves, but he was hit in the head with the butt of a pistol, before he and his family were locked in a room.
The thieves stole watches, jewellery, and money from the isolated farming property where Baggio had lived with his family for 15 years.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was able to get his family out of the room in which they were locked, but not before the thieves escaped. Reports also indicated that the theft occurred over a period of 40 minutes.
Roberto Baggio is the only Italian player to score in three World Cup finals, in addition to being the fourth best scorer in the history of the Italian national team.
