British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s award of a knighthood to Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour has sparked great controversy in Britain, in light of Sunak’s accusation of nepotism, especially since the Egyptian businessman is a donor to the Conservative Party, as he donated about 5 million pounds to the party last year.
The Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour’s receipt of a knighthood for services to “business, charity, and politics” prompted British politicians from the other camp to attack Sunak, and among them was the leader of the Reform Party in the United Kingdom, Richard Tice, who commented on Sunak’s decision to announce the honors, saying : “The nation is tired of the Tories and their obscene nepotism. Give them a few million pounds and get them a peerage or a knighthood. The whole thing is unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament and Leader of the Labor Party, Anneliese Dodds, said: “This is either the arrogant act of a privileged man who has stopped caring about the public’s opinion, or it comes from someone who does not expect to be Prime Minister for a long time,” adding: “In both cases, it shows blatant disrespect.” “For a position he should be proud to hold.”
According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour has donated to many charitable causes, including the King’s Foundation and a memorial to Covid victims. Mansour previously spoke of the Prime Minister in good terms, saying that he “understands how growth is generated in the modern economy.”
The timing of the honoring announcement on the eve of the Easter holiday and during Parliament’s recess raised eyebrows. However, officials justified the timing as necessary for appointments to the Privy Council, including the confirmation of Vaughan Gething as the new First Minister of Wales.
Commenting on being honored with the knighthood, Egyptian businessman Mohamed Mansour said: “This award is the greatest honor in my life. I am very grateful,” according to a statement published by the Mansour Group.
Mohamed Mansour is the president of Man Capital, an investment company based in London, which works to support the strategies of leading companies and provides them with long-term capital in various sectors around the world.
Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour previously provided 5 million pounds sterling to the governors last January. At the time, it was the largest single donation the party had received in more than 20 years. He will subsequently be appointed Chief Treasurer of the Conservative Party in December 2022.
From 2006 to 2009, the Egyptian billionaire served as Minister of Transport during the era of Hosni Mubarak.
