About 10 minutes later, Shaffelburg almost had a second goal but missed just wide to keep the match at 1-0. Canada had another golden chance to score a few minutes after Shaffelburg’s miss.

While it was all Canada in the first half, Venezuela came out of the second half hot, scoring the equalizer in the 63rd minute when Salomón Rondón scored on the break.

Soon after Venezuela’s equalizer, Canada once again came just shy of scoring.

After neither team managed to find the net before the end of stoppage time, the match came down to penalty kicks, though the first set wasn’t enough as both teams made three. Venezuela missed its sudden death shot, while Canada made its penalty kick to claim the win and advance.
