Dortmund police expect a peaceful match between England and the Netherlands, scheduled for tomorrow evening, Wednesday, in the semi-finals of the European Nations Championship (Euro 2024).
England and the Netherlands will meet at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund at 10 pm tomorrow, Wednesday, in the semi-finals of the European Nations Championship (Euro 2024).
The official spokeswoman for the Dortmund police said on Tuesday that the police do not classify the England-Netherlands match as high-risk.
“We expect a peaceful event, there is no hostile atmosphere between the fans of England and the Netherlands, and we expect a football festival,” she added in statements reported by the German News Agency.
She stressed that, despite this, special measures are necessary due to the large number of fans.
Around 80,000 Dutch fans and 25,000 English fans are expected in the western German city, although the stadium can only hold 65,000 spectators.
Therefore, the fan zones at Friedensplatz in the city and Westfalenpark, near the stadium, are expected to be crowded with fans without tickets to the match.
There will also be a need for a police presence, especially as thousands of Dutch fans plan to march to the stadium wearing orange, which has become one of the most iconic images of this tournament in previous rounds.
“Due to the large crowd size, we will deploy appropriate forces to ensure security,” a Dortmund police spokeswoman said.
She stressed that there were no concerns about a repeat of the major riots that occurred between English and German hooligans during the 1988 European Championship, when England met the Netherlands in Dusseldorf.
England lost to the Netherlands in the group stage of the 1988 edition, 3-1.
Some unfortunate incidents occurred from rioters provoked by the Germans’ provocations about the English losses at the hands of the Dutch mills.
