The rabbi of Beer Sheva and the brother of Shas party chairman Aryeh Deri, Rabbi Yehuda Deri, is being laid to rest this evening (Tuesday) at the Sanhedria cemetery near the grave of the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The funeral procession left from the “Forat Yosef” yeshiva on Yosef Ben Street Matityahu.
The former chief rabbi, Yisrael Lau, testified: “We prayed, we asked, but the decree was passed. He was concerned because of the accuracy of the Torah to appoint rabbis and judges. We used to tell him Rabbi Yehuda, not everyone has your abilities. He answered: ‘But the people of Israel need rabbis of stature ‘”.
Rabbi Ya’akov Shapira, head of the Merkaz Rabbi yeshiva: “Year after year we have seen you on a holy journey with the joy of the Torah. When you heard some good Torah thing, your face would beam with happiness. Bless you, Rabbi Yehuda, for raising sons who continue your path with wisdom and reverence for the Torah. Your heart is pure in all kinds of ways. Purification. Purifying agony. What agony you hid from the whole.”
The spiritual leader of the Shas, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, said at the funeral: “Pray for us in heaven to remove a malicious government from the country, so that they will not recruit the members of the yeshiva.” May this bad decree be lifted.”
A member of the Council of Shas Torah Sages, Rabbi Reuven Elbaz: “Illuminated every place and carved hearts. Who will give us in return. He lighted the way for the blessed. The people of Israel need at this time Rabbi Yehuda who could lift up the dignity of the Torah. Our hearts are broken. Israel’s blood was shed. But just as you were here as a public emissary to raise the honor of the people of Israel to carve hearts, you will probably continue there.
“The people of Israel need a time of decree for the people of Israel, God Almighty said, I will take this pearl. But there is a great comfort in knowing that you educated, guided and raised your sons, all of them a seed of holiness and purity, and that is our comfort.”
“A huge void has opened up in the family”
Rabbi Deri served as a member of the Chief Rabbinate Council of Israel and was a candidate for the position of Chief Rabbi. He was born in Morocco to a traditional family. At the age of ten he immigrated to Israel with his family who settled in Bat Yam.
He served as rabbi of the Ramot neighborhood in Jerusalem and was the head of the “Kol Yehuda” collective that he founded with the help of his brother. In 1997 he was appointed Rabbi of Beer Sheva and a member of the Rabbinical Council.
“With a heart boiled with sorrow and grief, I mourn the untimely departure of my elder brother, the crown of my head, great in Torah, great in law, great in virtues, a founder of the Torah, the great genius Rabbi Yehuda Deri ztzel, rabbi and rabbi of the city of Be’er Sheva and a member of the council The Chief Rabbinate,” his brother Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, eulogized him. “He was like a father figure to me, an older brother, a soul mate and a true friend in all the hardships of life. Always strengthened, encouraged and encouraged faith. A huge void opened up in my heart, in the heart of the entire family, and in the hearts of thousands of his students and listeners.”
