Everything you want to know about Apple’s new iOS 18

On Monday, September 16, Apple will make its new iOS 18 operating system available for download and installation, a few days before the new iPhone 16 phones are made available to the public on September 20.

iOS 18 is a release with more customization options, the biggest redesign ever for the Photos app, and new ways to manage your inbox in Mail and Satellite Messages, and more. Users will be able to arrange apps and widgets in any empty space on the Home Screen, customize the buttons at the bottom of the Lock screen, and quickly access more controls in Control Center. Photo libraries are automatically organized and displayed in a single new place in the Photos app, and new collections make it easy to access favorite photos.

Mail organizes and simplifies your inbox by categorizing emails using on-device intelligence, and iMessage comes with all-new text effects. Users can communicate via satellite in Messages when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, leveraging the unprecedented technology that iPhone’s existing satellite capabilities can use.

iOS 18 also introduces Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver incredibly useful and relevant intelligence. Designed from the ground up for privacy, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and extract data from personal context to speed up and simplify everyday tasks.

Additional features in iOS 18 include:

  • Apple Maps, where users can browse thousands of hikes across U.S. national parks and easily create their own hiking trails, which can be accessed offline. Maps users can also save their favorite national park hikes, custom hiking routes, and locations in the all-new Places Library, and add their own personal notes to each one.
  • Game Mode enhances the gaming experience with more consistent frame rates, especially during long gaming sessions, and makes wireless accessories, like AirPods and gaming controllers, incredibly responsive.
  • Users have new ways to pay with Apple Pay, including earning rewards or paying in installments with eligible credit or debit cards. And with Tap to Cash, users can send and receive Apple Cash simply by holding their iPhones together.
  • Tickets in Apple Wallet offer a richer fan experience, providing key event information, such as stadium details, recommended playlists from Apple Music, and more.
  • Apple Music’s Shared Play feature lets more people share control of music playback from HomePod, Apple TV, or any Bluetooth speaker, making listening together more fun and interactive.
  • The AirPods experience becomes even more personal, customizable and relevant to Siri requests, allowing AirPods Pro (2nd generation) users to nod to accept or shake their head to decline in response to Siri announcements. AirPods Pro feature noise isolation for clearer call quality, ensuring the caller’s voice is heard in loud or windy environments. The AirPods updates also bring the best wireless audio latency Apple has ever offered to mobile gaming, and add custom spatial audio for an immersive gaming experience.
  • In the Diary app, an all-new information display helps users track and write down their daily goals, and the ability to search and sort entries makes it easy to enjoy past memories.
  • The calendar becomes even more useful by showing both events and tasks from reminders. Users can create, edit, and complete reminders directly from the calendar, and an updated monthly view provides an overview of events and tasks at a glance.
  • In the My Health app, the medical ID has been redesigned to make it easier for paramedics to find the most important information in emergency situations.
  • Emergency SOS Live Video allows users to share their surroundings through live video and recorded media. In the middle of an emergency call, participating emergency responders can send a request for the user to share live video or media from the user’s camera over a secure connection, making it easier and faster to get help.
  • The Home app offers guest access, giving users easy ways to give guests control over select smart home accessories, set schedules for when guests can access the Home app, and more. For a hassle-free home entry experience, Hands-Free Unlock with Home Keys leverages Ultra Wideband technology to allow users to instantly open supported entry locks as soon as they are within six feet of the front door.
