Khamenei receives Assad in Iran
A statement from Khamenei’s office stated that the two sides discussed bilateral relations and regional developments, in the presence of the interim president Muhammad Mukhbar.
According to the statement, Khamenei stressed that the late president played a prominent role in strengthening bilateral relations, and Foreign Minister Abdullahian also had a special interest and role in (strengthening) relations with Syria.
Khamenei stated that the interim President, Mohammad Mokhber, maintains the same approach, noting that he considers the relations between the two countries “essential pillars of the axis of resistance.”
In turn, Al-Assad offered his condolences to the Iranian government and people, and pointed out that Iranian-Syrian relations are “strategic” and progressing under Khamenei’s directives.

In February 2019, Al-Assad visited Iran, his first visit to Tehran since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
