Heartbreaking: Celine Dion experienced a severe attack of the “stiff person” syndrome in front of the cameras

More than a year and a half after Celine Dion revealed that she was diagnosed with “Stiff Man” syndrome, which led to her having to cancel all her performances, yesterday (Tuesday) the documentary following the legendary singer, who is dealing with the rare disease, appeared on Amazon Prime Video.

As part of the film “I: Celine Dion”, the 56-year-old singer allowed the cameras to record a particularly difficult and exposed moment in which she suffered a severe attack of the neurological disease, which causes the body’s muscles to stiffen and have severe muscle spasms. The heart-wrenching scene shows Dion having a seizure that lasted for many minutes and caused her great suffering. It begins when the Grammy winner’s doctor evaluates her condition after she suffered convulsions as a result of the rare neurological syndrome she was diagnosed with in 2022.

Watch a clip from the movie:

“Part of the disease is that as soon as you go into a contraction, sometimes… the signal to release it is not understood, so in the end it remains in a contracted state,” explains sports medicine therapist Trill Lobo in the film. After he asks her to lie down on a massage table, Dion Bat continues to convulse, as Lobo warns that “this could lead to a crisis.”

Immediately after, the Canadian singer is recorded as she begins to go into a full-blown seizure, and the doctor calls another member of the medical team to bring her Valium, a drug that treats the nervous system. At this point, Dion’s face is full of grief and pain, when she is no longer able to contain her pain, and is recorded moaning and shaking in immense pain when she is unable to move on her own. Tears fall from Dion’s eyes as she continues to contract, and barely manages to shake the doctor’s hand, who asks her to try to relax. After being given two doses of nasal spray, Dion begins to snap out of the seizure, with the doctor pointing out that if she hadn’t been able to get over it, they would have had to rush her to the hospital.

After she manages to recover a little, Dion shares with those present in the room that such cases make her feel “so embarrassed”. “I don’t know how to express it, it’s simple… you know, like not being in control of yourself.”

Lobo explains in the film that the probable explanation for the seizure that arose probably lies in the fact that Dion was in the studio singing shortly before, which led to overstimulation of her brain. “Well, what am I going to do?” she asked. “If I can’t be provoked by what I like, then I’m going to go on stage, and you’re going to put a heart rate monitor on me and turn me upside down?” To this, Lobo replied: “It’s scary, I know. It’s hard. It’s not the end of your journey – we all know that, but it’s always this step in the journey.”

As you remember, Dion had to cancel a long series of performances in Europe, North America and Las Vegas after she was diagnosed with the disease, but after revealing her struggle with the syndrome, she made it clear that despite the difficulties and paralyzing pain of the rare and incurable disease, she will do everything to perform again. “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop,” promised Dion, who has been documented twice in recent months at glittering red carpet events: the Grammy ceremony last February and the premiere of the documentary last week.
