Southgate also spoke to Sky Sports about the performances of Kobbie Mainoo and others: “Kobbie’s attributes are there for everyone to see. The ability to receive under pressure and ride challenges, to manipulate the ball in tight areas.
“He gives us a different profile in midfield to anything we’ve got, he’s adapted and adjusted brilliantly. You can’t believe his age really, that he’s taken everything in his stride in as he has.
“Jarrod Bowen had an excellent game. Ivan Toney was very, very good. We got Phil Foden more into the game in the second half, the space was blocked on the left before half-time and Jude Bellingham was drifting out there.
“James Maddison had a good impact when he came on, and obviously Kobbie Mainoo gave us something completely different from a creative aspect. Jude is the headline, and that competitive spirit and desire not to lose was decisive in getting the late goal.
“But I thought the whole team showed that throughout the game and recovered from setbacks with a pretty young team, against a side who are very experienced.”
