Brazil bid farewell to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa America football tournament, after losing to a man-less Uruguay 2-4 on penalties, after a goalless draw in regular time, on Saturday, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Uruguay, who played the last quarter of an hour with ten players after Nahitan Nandez was sent off, will meet Colombia in the semi-finals, who crushed Panama 5-0 under the leadership of veteran James Rodriguez. In the second semi-final, defending champions Argentina will play Canada.
Both teams failed to score in the match, which was missed by Brazil’s star striker, Vinicius Junior, due to suspension, and was replaced by teenager Endrick for the first time in the starting lineup with the “Seleção”.
The 17-year-old, who will join European champions Real Madrid at the end of the tournament for $64 million, dribbled past Uruguayan defenders but fell victim to the toughness and sometimes roughness of his opponents.
Uruguay players committed 26 mistakes out of 41, including a dangerous kick by Nandes on the ankle of Real Madrid striker Rodrigo in the 74th minute.
But the men of Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa held out until the end of regular time.
In the penalty shootout, Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet stopped defender Eder Militao’s shot before Douglas Lewis’ shot bounced off the underside of the post.
Alisson Becker’s save from Jose Maria Gimenez was not enough for Brazil to bid farewell to the tournament with a single win in four matches, beating Paraguay 4-1 in the group stage, where they drew with Costa Rica 0-0 and Colombia 1-1.
Coach Dorival Junior, 62, excluded midfielder Casemiro, forwards Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison, and veteran defender Thiago Silva from Brazil’s squad for the tournament, while Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is absent due to injury.
