Kieran McKenna, Ipswich Town coach, is wanted by 3 Premier League clubs.
McKenna led Ipswich Town, which includes Egyptian player Sam Morsi, to return to the English Premier League next season, after winning second place in the Championship.
The British newspaper “Daily Mail” said early today, Thursday, that Brighton is competing with Chelsea to sign McKenna, before the start of next season (2024-2024).
This comes after the departure of the Italian Roberto De Zerbe from the position of coach of Brighton, and the same applies to the Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, who left Chelsea.
Manchester United enters the race to sign McKenna
According to the British Sky Sports network, Manchester United has also joined the competition for McKenna’s services, in light of the ambiguity surrounding the future of Dutchman Eric Ten Hag, his current coach.
The network indicated that United officials made contact with McKenna’s representatives to discuss the possibility of contracting with him if they decided to dismiss Ten Hag after the end of the current season.
The report stated that United’s loss in the FA Cup final next Saturday means that the team will not participate in any European tournament next season, which may result in the dismissal of Ten Hag and the search for a new coach.
In another report, the Daily Mail stated that McKenna has what Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking for, who recently acquired a percentage of United’s shares, in addition to being a fan of the team, and having previously worked for it for a short period.
Who is Kieran McKenna?
McKenna is 38 years old and is a former player who was not fortunate enough to reach the professional level.
McKenna’s career ended in 2009 when he was 23 years old due to a serious injury, and in 2015 he began his coaching career with Tottenham, with whom he spent 7 years as a youth.
McKenna coached the Tottenham under-18 team for one season (2015-2016), and moved to coach the same age group at Manchester United between 2016 and 2018.
Media reports stated that McKenna’s support for Manchester United since childhood played a role in his quick departure from Tottenham to get a job at the club of his dreams.
After a hiatus for several years, the young English coach took over the position of coach of the Ipswich Town team in 2021, and at that time it was a competitor in League 1 (the third division after the Premier League and the First Division).
McKenna achieved remarkable success with Ipswich Town, and within approximately 3 years he led Sam Morsi and his companions to return to the Premier League after an absence of 23 years.
Currently, McKenna is linked to Ipswich Town on a contract that extends until the summer of 2025 (the end of next season).
