Most of us remember Goldfuss from that famous speech, in which he demanded that the country’s leaders be worthy of IDF soldiers. Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi reprimanded Goldfuss following that speech, which did not prevent him from promoting him to the rank of general a few months later. Because with all due respect to his ability as a speaker or an interviewee, Goldfuss is first and foremost a fighter and a commander – and one cannot argue with the results of the fire brigade’s fighting in Gaza during the war. The division killed thousands of terrorists in Khan Yunis, arrested hundreds more, and destroyed dozens of kilometers of active terrorist tunnels – which made it easier for the security forces to return alive hostages home. Over 180 of his soldiers were killed in combat, and over 3,000 were wounded. I hesitate to give marks to Goldfuss’ conduct in the war, but it seems on his face that he is the type of commander that soldiers know they can follow with their eyes closed, and mothers know that they can entrust the fate of their children to him.
But this is not a command review, but a television review – and from a television standpoint, we received almost 20 minutes of propaganda broadcast for the next leader of Israel, or at least of the IDF. Twice in the interview, Goldfuss himself spoke of the importance of asking difficult questions, saying that this is what characterizes Dor The excellent fighters of today. He called “doubting the way”, and the interviewer looks more like the chairman of Goldfus’s fan club, and not like a veteran reporter who knows how to ask the difficult questions, or even the mediocre ones. .
Goldfuss said all the right things, both as a commander and as a potential political leader. He explained that being moral is not a weakness, but a strength. He spoke about the importance of maintaining the country’s democratic values, and mentioned that we must not become Hamas ourselves. Relative to a military man, this is quite a lot. Also his statement about the importance of returning the abductees which according to him is a “supreme, ethical and moral task”. When he talked about his commitment to the country, it’s hard not to believe him, especially because we want them to be the leaders of our forces on the battlefield. Commanders who act out of love for the country, not out of hatred for the enemy.
