At the age of 37 and after the sixth championship in his career, Sharan Yeni announced today (Monday) his retirement from active play. The biggest symbol of Maccabi Tel Aviv, who came up to the seniors somewhere in 2004/05 and went through the difficult years with the club, hangs up his shoes after a most glorious career.
Only last Saturday the captain, who went up to stand 11 to celebrate with the crowd, added championship number 6 in his career to his magnificent and loaded trophy cabinet. In total, the retiring captain of the yellows won 16 titles with the club and is placed second in the ranking of Maccabi players of all time with 555 appearances.
In the yellow uniform, Yeni, who moved to the Netherlands for two seasons to Witsa Arnhem from where he returned again to Maccabi Tel Aviv, scored 19 goals in all competitions and made no less than 32 appearances in the Israel national team uniform. During his career, Yeni was placed in almost every possible position, every hole he had to enter, including even the goalie position.
Naturally, with age and injuries, Yeni (19 seasons at Maccabi) made only 10 appearances this season in all formats, the fewest since the first years of his career, but Robbie Keane also testified after the championship about his great contribution to the dressing room and in general to the challenging season that the yellows from Tel Aviv went through and ended in the championship 25 of the club and 6 of the retiring captain.
