The Syrian national team snatched a draw from its counterpart, the Myanmar national team, in a match in the Asian qualifiers, the second round, which qualifies for the 2026 World Cup.
The match between Syria and Myanmar was held today, Thursday, at Tofuna Stadium, as part of the third round of the group stage.
The Myanmar national team took the lead first through Saw Moe Kyaw, in the 35th minute, and the Syrian national team succeeded in equalizing through Aladdin Al-Dali, in the 71st minute.
Syria, led by Hector Cuper, rose to second place in the group with 4 points, behind Japan, which leads with a full score, while Myanmar finishes the group with one point, and North Korea comes third with only 3 points.
Earlier today, for the same group, Japan defeated North Korea (1-0) in a match held at the new National Stadium in Tokyo.
Syria will host the Myanmar national team, as part of the fourth round competitions, next Tuesday, March 26, at Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
Syria beat North Korea (1-0) in the first round and lost to Japan (5-0) in the team’s second match in the qualifying round.
The first and second in each group qualify for the third round of the World Cup qualifiers, in addition to qualifying to participate in the 2027 Asian Nations Cup in Saudi Arabia.
While the 18 teams in the third round are divided into 3 groups, competing in a league system, the first and second in each group qualify directly to the World Cup, while the third and fourth placed teams play an additional play-off from which two other teams qualify, while another team competes in the global play-off to decide the final half-card for Asia. .
While in terms of the last participation in the Asian Nations Cup, Syria was eliminated from the round of 16 against Iran, via penalty shootout (5-3) after the match ended in a positive draw (1-1).
