Joseph, peace be upon him, is one of those mentioned in the Qur’an and the Torah. He was famous for his ability to interpret dreams and was extremely beautiful. According to Al-Tabari’s interpretation, God described the story of Joseph in the Qur’an as “the best of stories.” He says in verse 3 of the Surah, addressing the Prophet Muhammad: “We narrate to you the best of stories, because We have revealed to you this Qur’an, even if you were before it. Of the heedless ones 3﴿ [يوسف:3]. The scholars differed as to why this surah was called the best of stories among all the other surahs of the Qur’an. It was said: Because there is no story in the Qur’an that contains as many lessons and wisdom as this story does. It was said: God called it the best of stories because of Joseph’s compassion for his brothers, his patience in hurting them, his forgiveness of them, and his generosity in pardoning them. And it was said: Because it contains mention of the prophets, the righteous, the angels and the devils, the jinn, the humans, the cattle, the birds, the lives of kings and kingdoms, the merchants, the scholars, the ignorant, the men and women, their tricks and their deceptions, and it contains the mention of monotheism, jurisprudence, biography, the interpretation of visions, politics, cohabitation, livelihood management, and all the benefits that are suitable for religion and the world. It was said that it contains mention of the beloved and the beloved and their conduct.
