Amit Sosna’s testimony in the “New York Times” about the sexual assault she suffered while in captivity in Hamas is a must-read for every human being, and certainly for every Israeli. In clear words, she describes what her captors did to her: the harm, the humiliation and the terror she went through during the long weeks she was held in Gaza.
It is impossible to read this testimony and not wander in thoughts to the captives who are now in Gaza – the nightmare she described is their reality. While we are back to normal, they are raped and humiliated. It has been going on for 173 days, with no horizon: as of this writing, the negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a new prisoner deal are at an impasse.
Hamas can be blamed for the situation. It is also possible that the price that Israel is required to pay is unreasonable, although this is a negotiation in which each side sets its demands as a basis for the continuation of the dialogue. The problem is that there are elements in Israel – including the government and the Knesset – who live at peace with the fact that there are many more Amit Sosna in Gaza today. From their point of view , there is time and nothing burns.
These ministers and MKs have an explanation. Hamas must be eliminated first. This tension between the dissolution of Hamas and the release of the abductees has existed from the beginning, and the argument that prioritizes the abductees is that their time is running out, while the elimination of Hamas has no expiration date. In other words: every day we lose abductees who died in captivity, while the elimination of Sinwar and Co. can be postponed for another month or year. In any case, their successors will arise, who will also be eliminated, so this is a war without a time limit – unlike the situation of the abductees.
But let’s put this argument aside, and go with those who favor Mitut Hamas. Let them explain, please: how is it that there is a very limited force in the Gaza Strip today, much less than it had at the beginning of the road – and how they intend to use this force to achieve absolute victory.
And how is it that the IDF has not yet captured the refugee camps of the center of the Gaza Strip and Rafah. How is this going to happen when the dispute with the US and the rest of the world has grown and is already threatening the legitimacy of the continuation of the war. And how will the situation on the northern border turn out? And who exactly will fight all these wars when the conscription law is passed, and if the general sector fights on all these fronts – who will work and pay taxes to keep the dodgers.
The truth needs to be told: the government and its leader are familiar to us. Israel is faltering in Gaza and far from victory. It also falters in the north and is far from victory there as well. On both fronts it has impressive tactical achievements, but one person will be reinstated who will claim that Israel’s strategic situation – security, political, economic – is better today than it was on October 7th.
In order for this situation to change, things need to be fundamentally changed here. The public is already there, united and thirsty for victory, but its government is elsewhere. She is busy with herself, with her survival, with her chairs and toffees, with everything except the most important thing – our son. Only one thing will help such an opaque government: a meeting with Amit Sosna. to hear in their ears. Let them look into her eyes. And shut up. It’s better if they shut up.
