The Prime Minister’s Office announced today (Sunday) that on Saturday night, during a routine check-up, a hernia was discovered in Prime Minister Netanyahu. In consultation with his doctors, it was decided that tonight Netanyahu will arrive at the hospital for hernia surgery, which he will do under full anesthesia. So what exactly is a “hernia”, what does it come from? And is it serious? We are arranging for you the medical procedure that the Prime Minister will undergo.
What is a hernia? A hernia, also known by synonymous names such as a hernia, a hernia, a hernia, etc., is actually a protrusion of a tissue or an organ from the abdomen, which was created congenitally or following some event during life. The existing weakness in the envelope of the abdominal muscles allows for the development of gradual protrusion and the creation of an opening and imperfection in the abdominal wall and groin, through which tissue content, or even part of an intestine, protrudes. The hernia may lead to symptoms of discomfort, pain, and in extreme cases even lead to a process of confinement and suffocation of its contents – then the situation is life-threatening and requires urgent intervention. According to the announcement of the Prime Minister’s Office, this is an early identification of the hernia that has not yet reached a dangerous situation.
How do you identify a hernia? It is quite easy to recognize a hernia, since it is often accompanied by local swelling under the skin, pain that increases with a change of position or weight lifting, coughing and exertion, in addition to redness in the area and local sensitivity, sometimes with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. It is assumed that the Prime Minister felt some of these symptoms during the routine examination, which aroused the suspicion of the medical staff who quickly identified the hernia. It should be noted that the condition of a hernia does not improve with time and the only treatment for it is surgery.
Most surgeries to repair hernias are performed on an elective basis and the duration of hospitalization is usually up to 24 hours after surgery. However, the hospitalization may be longer, if there are underlying diseases or if the surgery was complex and large.
In the medical report published on Netanyahu’s condition three months ago, it was stated that the Prime Minister is under strict and routine medical monitoring. During last year he underwent routine annual examinations without any unusual findings” and that Netanyahu “maintains a healthy lifestyle and a proper diet.” Later, the cardiologist Prof. Roy Beinert stated that the pacemaker implanted in his body is working properly, his condition is stable from a cardiac point of view, and he does not need any additional treatment except for routine follow-up which is accepted for pacemaker implantees.
