Nebraska’s Trev Alberts has not made a final decision to go to Texas A&M, according to AP

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The University of Nebraska’s Athletic Director Trev Alberts has been targeted to become the next Athletic Director at Texas A&M University, according to multiple outlets, and first reported by the Houston Chronicle. As of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the Associated Press reports that “Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts has not made a final decision on whether to accept the athletic director’s job at Texas A&M.” That information from the AP comes from executive associate AD Doug Ewald, Alberts’ top assistant.

10/11 reached out to the University of Nebraska system for a response. “Trev has not informed President Kabourek that he has accepted another opportunity,” Melissa Lee, Chief Communication Officer for the University of Nebraska System said. Chris Kabourek has been serving as University of Nebraska interim president since Jan. 1 after Ted Carter left to become president at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Alberts, a Nebraska alum and former All-American Husker football player, signed a new contract in November to keep him at the University of Nebraska through 2031, though the contract had liquidated damage buyouts that Alberts would have to pay to the University if he were to leave for another opportunity. Alberts was making a salary of $1.7 million at Nebraska with an increase to $2.1 million in 2026. At that time, 10/11 Sports Director Kevin Sjuts sat down with Alberts for a 1-on-1 interview with Alberts saying “I do like my job, I feel incredibly honored to be at the University of Nebraska.”

Texas A&M has been looking to replace Ross Bjork, who left Texas A&M to become the Ohio State Athletic Director in January.

Alberts was announced as Nebraska’s Athletic Director in July of 2021, making a move from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Alberts replaced Bill Moos.

During his time as Athletic Director, Alberts replaced head football coach Scott Frost with Matt Rhule. Alberts also spearheaded the successful ‘Volleyball Day in Nebraska’ in 2023, before the Volleyball team played for a National Championship. The Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball teams are both preparing for NCAA tournament bids.
