Reed Sheppard’s NBA dreams become reality

BROOKLYN (WKYT) – Reed Sheppard is taking his star appeal to the Lone Star State! The former North Laurel and UK guard was taken by the Houston Rockets with the No. 3 pick in Wednesday’s NBA Draft.

Sheppard shot his way, literally, onto the college basketball scene during his only season at UK.  The London native was a 3-point machine for Kentucky in 2023-2024, hitting 52.1 percent of his 3-point attempts as a freshman.  Sheppard averaged 12.5ppg to go along with 2.5 steals per game.  Sheppard was named the SEC Freshman of the Year.

One of the eye-opening Draft Combine stats was Sheppard’s 42-inch vertical leap, which tied three others for the top spot back in May.  Sheppard’s athleticism and basketball IQ are two of his top qualities.

Sheppard is the first former Wildcat to hail from Kentucky’s mountain region (regions 13-15) to be chosen in the NBA Draft since Todd May (Virgie HS, 1982 Mr. Basketball) was taken in the 4th round of the 1987 Draft also by the San Antonio Spurs.
