Dr. Hisham Arafat, former Minister of Transport, died on Wednesday afternoon, according to what his son Khaled announced on his Facebook page, after suffering from cancer.

The former Minister of Transport is considered one of the most prominent road experts in Egypt. He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University in 1985, and obtained a master’s degree from the same university in 1991, followed by a doctorate from Germany in 1998. He is married, his two sons work as engineers, and his wife is an engineer and works in the private sector.

Arafat obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Ain Shams University in 1985. and a master’s degree from the same university in 1991; He holds a doctorate from Ain Shams University and the University of Braunschweig in Germany, and worked as a professor of structural engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University.

The former Minister of Transport held many positions at the university, where he served as a member of the National Committee to Supervise Special Programs.

The former Minister of Transport previously participated in the design and construction of the first and second lines of the metro, and he worked for a period as a consultant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he participated in the design and construction of a number of tunnels and bridges in the cities of Jeddah and Taif.

In 2010, Arafat worked as an advisor to the Minister of Transport for tunnels and roads affairs. He has extensive knowledge of the files of the Ministry of Transport, the most important of which is the national road project. He supervised the process of passing the giant Nefertari excavator down the sewer pipe on Port Said Street in the Bab al-Sharia area in 2010, during Implementing the first phase of the third line of the metro, where a committee formed by former Minister of Transport Alaa Fahmy was chaired; To supervise the process of transporting the excavator at this stage, which was the most difficult due to fears of a collapse or breakage of the pipe; This would have caused Cairo to drown in sewage, but he was able to complete the operation successfully.

He designed more than 10 bridges, participated in the design and construction of the first and second lines of the metro, and worked as a consultant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The former Minister of Transport also participated in the design and construction of a number of tunnels and bridges in the cities of Jeddah and Taif, and in 2010 he worked as an advisor to the Minister of Transport for tunnels and roads.

Hisham Arafat assumed the Ministry of Transport in the government of Engineer Sherif Ismail in February 2017, and continued his position in the Madbouly Ministry. He submitted his resignation on February 27, 2019, following the Ramses train station accident.

During his tenure as ministry, Arafat supervised the national road project, which created a noticeable boom in road infrastructure in Egypt.

The former Minister of Transport served as Head of the Structural Engineering Department at Future University.

On October 17, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, issued a decision for Dr. Hisham Arafat, engineering professor and former Minister of Transport, to travel abroad for treatment at state expense, after he entered the Arab Contractors Hospital complaining of fatigue in his eyes, then it became clear that his health condition was serious.

The Minister of Health’s decision came immediately after a presidential directive was issued to the government to do everything necessary to treat Dr. Arafat at this time.

The funeral prayer for Dr. Hisham Arafat is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Sayyida Nafisa Mosque after the afternoon prayer.
