Mavericks Win Several NSIC Awards for Outdoor Season – Minnesota State University

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota State women’s track and field team received several NSIC outdoor awards for their efforts this season.

Senior Denisha Cartwright was named the NSIC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, while junior Adeya Brewster received the NSIC Outdoor Newcomer of the Year award. Head Coach Mike Turgeon was named the NSIC Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year, while Chris Parno was named the NSIC Women’s Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year.

Cartwright earned the NSIC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year award after recording a championship high 32.5 points at the NSIC Outdoor Championships. She won four events at the outdoor championships including the 100m, 200m, 100m hurdles and the 4×100 relay, while also setting NSIC records in the 100m (11.10), 200m (22.71) and 100m hurdles (12.60).

Brewster scored the second-most points (23.5) at the NSIC Outdoor Championships. She won the 4×100 relay event and finished second in the 100m hurdles and the long jump events.

Turgeon led the Mavericks to their third straight NSIC Outdoor Championship and fifth overall. In total, the Mavericks finished first in nine events and garnered 18 All-NSIC honors.

Student-athletes coached by Parno scored 115 of MSU’s 252 points at the NSIC Outdoor Championships. He coached Cartwright who was the top point scorer at the NSIC Championships. He also coached his student-athletes to three NSIC records.

Minnesota State continues its season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The championships will be held from May 23-25 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan.
