The German team Bayer Leverkusen, led by Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, continued its unbeaten streak in the current football season 2023-2024, by drawing with its host, Karabaj Ajdam of Azerbaijan, with two goals to the same, in the match that brought them together this evening, Thursday, in the framework of the first leg of the round of 16 of the European League championship.
Alonso’s squad refused to lose to Karabaj Ajdam at the latter’s Tofik Ibrahimov Stadium, after the German team trailed by two unanswered goals in the first half of the match.
Yasni Benzia cut the match’s scoring tape in the 26th minute, and his teammate Junino added the second goal in the 45+2 minute, giving the Azerbaijani team the lead with this double in the first half of the match.
In the second half, Florian Wirtz reduced the gap with a goal in the 70th minute, before Patrik Schick equalized for Bayer Leverkusen in the 90th + 2 minute.
Thus, coach Xabi Alonso’s squad continues to impress this season, remaining undefeated in the European League, the German League and the German Cup.
With this result, Bayer Leverkusen put one foot forward in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, before the return match at the BayArena in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16.
